Holistic Health Coaching & Essential Physical Therapy
A journal club is a space for both creative solitude and also community. In this space we navigate illness and heartbreak, recovery and resilience. We wrestle with life’s big questions and we celebrate its inherent beauty. We create a life that feels inspiring, despite any uncertainty we may experience.
Our U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness a public health epidemic in 2023. A recent poll from the American Psychiatric Association found that 1 in 3 adult Americans feels loneliness every week. As much as 73% of 16-24 year olds say they struggle with loneliness. This journal club is a gathering to bring us closer to one another. We laugh, we recognize each other, we feel less alone. Our gatherings are equal parts tender and mischevious. We make friends, connect with old friends, write together, and surprise ourselves.
All are welcome.
Journal club is a gathering where we may read a passage of text or essay, journal to accompanying prompts, and have a conversation about whatever comes up. Anyone can join us for journaling. This is a group for people willing to sit in a room, scribble into a notebook, and watch the magic unfold.
There are no set expectations. We let each gathering grow organically. Our time together is part ritual and part improv. We do have a general structure, but there is also space for each meeting to develop it’s own direction.
We begin with a brief few minutes to gather and wait for journalers to arrive. During this time we might share a little about our past journaling experience.
Next we will set the stage and review any instructions for that meeting’s writings.
We’ll shift into some humorous or otherwise curious short activity.
Then we will describe our writing prompt. We may either read a short passage of text or review the specific prompt. We’ll write in quiet for a few minutes.
Next is a discussion. During this time we can share what surfaced in our writings. We’ll let the conversation flow and unfold.
And finally, we’ll end with a conversational prompt.
There is no expectation that you will share your writings. Our journal writings can be very personal at times. And we encourage you to share to your comfort level. You may find that while you don’t want to share your writings, you may feel comfortable sharing in the general experience of the writing. We want you to share (or not) to the degree you are comfortable. What is most important to each meeting, is that we create a space of community. Journaling is a method to help facilitate the building of that community.
Currently we meet at the clinic of Michele Green, DPT, Essential Physical Therapy & Pain Care, PLLC. Our gatherings meet for 60 minutes in length. The number of times we meet is not set. Journal Club is an ongoing, weekly gathering.
A notebook. A pen. That’s it.
Our Journal Club meets once a week, with the exception of holidays.
