With an accurate diagnosis and evaluation of your symptoms and pelvic floor musculature, an effective treatment program is designed. Common interventions used include pelvic floor muscle retraining and biofeedback. Exercise-based pelvic floor muscle retraining leads to an ~70% reduction in symptoms. Biofeedback training leads to an ~80-90% reduction in symptoms. Your treatment program will be designed based upon your needs and goals.
While cause can range from pregnancy and childbirth, injury, surgery, infection, and many others, pelvic floor therapy has shown to be effective in treating pelvic floor related conditions.
Pelvic floor muscle treatments and evaluations are performed in a secure, private space. Your comfort is a priority. Pelvic floor muscle therapy is a safe and effective treatment designed to meet your needs.
Your therapist will discuss with you symptoms you’ve experienced, your medical history, and your goals. Questions about your bowel and bladder function, as well as your sexual history will be asked. A physical exam is also part of the initial evaluation.
From the initial evaluation, a treatment plan will be designed that will be most effective for your symptoms and your goals. Typically, treatment plans include strengthening and flexibility exercises, biofeedback to improve muscle control, manual therapy, electrical stimulation, and lifestyle and behavior changes to support healthy functioning of your pelvic floor muscles and your genitourinary system.
PT sessions generally are between 60-90 minutes, 1-2 times per week, dependent upon your needs and situation. Sessions may include exercise, anatomy education, the use of equipment, and discussion on lifestyle impacts and beneficial changes. The time you will spend in therapy will depend on your needs. Some patients find that they experience results in a few weeks while others need longer-term therapy.
